ART
At the Hamlet we believe Art is a subject that gives all children the opportunity to excel and express themselves through their creativity. Some of the highest forms of human creativity can be embodied through art, craft and design. Therefore, at the Hamlet we aim to offer an art curriculum that engages, inspires and challenges the pupils and in doing so, equipping them with the knowledge and required skills to have the confidence to experiment, invent and create their own pieces of art, craft and design. As the children move through the school, they are able to think more critically and they develop a deeper understanding of art and the history behind what they are producing.
Throughout lessons, children are encouraged to produce creative work and explore their ideas as well as recording them. Children become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art techniques while also learning how to evaluate and analyse creative works, using the language of the artistic world. Throughout our art curriculum, pupils learn about a wide range of great artists, and understand the historical and cultural developments of different art forms. During their time at the Hamlet, all children create sketch books where they are able to record observations and review and revisit their work in a way which enables their continued artistic development.
During the summer term, the staff at the Hamlet collate the years artwork and organise an art show to celebrate the artistic achievements of all the children in the school.

Following the summer art exhibition, a selection of the work is taken up to North Dulwich train station where it is displayed in large metal frames along each platform so that they can continue to be enjoyed by a wider audience. We change the work over on an annual basis. It is a huge extra task, but one that the school place great importance on. The Hamlet was able to secure the frames a few years ago by submitting a bid to Southwark Council via the Cleaner, Greener, Safer Fund. |
