DULWICH HAMLET EDUCATIONAL TRUST
Dulwich Hamlet Educational Trust (DHET) was set up in 2011 as a single school/academy Trust to oversee the running of Dulwich Hamlet Junior School. It became a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT in 2014 when it agreed to open a new Free School in Peckham, working alongside Southwark Council. DHET now runs two schools, Dulwich Hamlet Junior and the Belham Primary, which opened in September 2015. Each school also has a Local Governing Body (LGB), which is a committee of the Trust.
The MAT/Trust Board is responsible for the strategic direction and overall financial management of the MAT and its schools, including senior appointments and management.
The LGBs have delegated responsibility for the operation of their individual schools, within the overall framework set by the MAT. Both LGBs are currently chaired by Governors who are also Trustees.
DHET was established by the Dulwich Hamlet Junior School Governing Body when it converted from being a local authority maintained school, to an academy school funded directly by the Department for Education. This was a voluntary conversion, which took place following discussions with the local authority and the wider school community and reflected the significant advantages to the school of conversion.
The MAT is run by the Executive Headteacher who reports to the MAT Board and is also a Trustee. The Executive Headteacher is both the chief executive of the MAT and its Accounting Officer, and therefore answerable to Government for how the MAT spends its money. Each school is run day to day by a Head of School who reports to the Executive Headteacher.

What Are School Trusts/MATs?
A MAT is a non-profit making charitable Trust that runs state funded schools. It is a legal entity that governs a group of schools through a single set of trustees. It is set up by a group of schools, usually a local collaboration, that share a common ethos and vision. Alternatively it is the result of previous MATs coming together into a merged MAT – as a result of shared vision, value and ethos. Once a MAT has been set up, further schools can join, or the MAT can be asked to ‘sponsor’ a school, particularly one which requires support, this can include new schools.
Changes in the educational landscape over several years meant that Head Teachers and Governors were given the opportunity to take their own decisions and control their own destinies. The senior staff and Governors at Dulwich Hamlet Junior School took advantage of this opportunity when they converted in 2011. This new freedom meant that the Trust was in a good position in 2014 to agree to work with the local authority to open a second school, The Belham Primary School.
Trustees are keen to continue to work collaboratively and will explore appropriate and sustainable opportunities for the MAT to grow further in the future. Trustees believe that the strong collaboration and accountability afforded by the MAT can drive up standards and encourage the sharing of best practice and services across its schools to the benefit of all.
