ART
At Dulwich Hamlet, nurturing creativity and imagination is a cornerstone of our educational philosophy. Our art curriculum is carefully crafted to engage students in visual, tactile, and sensory experiences that offer unique perspectives on the world around them. We strive to equip every child with the ability to express their observations, emotions, and thoughts through the medium of colour, texture, form, and pattern, utilizing a variety of materials and techniques.
Our aim is to inspire students to draw inspiration from their local environment, as well as from diverse historical periods and cultures. By doing so, we encourage the development of critical thinking skills while fostering respect and appreciation for diversity. To support this goal, we have curated a selection of artists and designers, ranging from the vivid colours and bold lines of African artist Rufus Ogundele to the mixed media artistry of Asian-American Pacita Abad. These influences serve to enrich our curriculum and connect closely with other areas of study.
To reinforce our curriculum choices, we organize visits and experiences that ignite students' imagination and creativity. For example, Year 4 students explore Dulwich Park as part of their study on Conrad Shawcross, while Year 5 students visit the Marianne North gallery in Kew Gardens. Additionally, our students engage with the Dulwich Picture Gallery, where they reflect on the works of the Old Masters and gain insights into art history's role in shaping our world.
As students’ progress through our school, they deepen their understanding of how art and design reflect and shape history, culture, and creativity. They learn to appreciate the contribution of art to the richness of our world and develop their skills as artists.
We celebrate our students' artistic achievements by prominently displaying their work throughout the school, including classrooms and halls. Our renowned art exhibition, held annually in January, showcases each child's creativity and growth as an artist. Visitors have the opportunity to admire the final pieces created by the students, as well as to trace their artistic journey through their sketchbooks. This exhibition not only highlights the talent of our students but also underscores our commitment to fostering a lifelong passion for the arts and continuous artistic development.
