OUR CURRICULUM
Outstanding learning, within a glittering curriculum, where everyone matters.
At DHJS, our curriculum is at the heart of our school vision and a core component of what it is to attend the school. We are proud of our ambitious, deep and balanced offer which is drawn from the National Curriculum. Our separate subject pages give you more information, provided by our subject leads.
Curriculum Links: Our vision for teaching each subject is laid out in our ‘intent’ statement. Each subject area has a coherently and carefully sequenced curriculum, with the essential knowledge highlighted for class teachers, so that a child experiences a progressive journey as they move up the school to Year 6. |
|
We also consider our curriculum at the year group level so that children are able to make links between subject areas throughout the year. For example in Year 5 History, children study Nelson Mandela's impact on the world, whilst in Art they study the African artist Rufus Ogundele and in Geography the climatic zones of the African continent. This helps them build a more holistic understanding of the importance of African history and culture and its impact on our society today.
Finally, we also make links across different year groups, through the use of a whole school curriculum plan. This means that the children are able to apply the knowledge that they learnt in previous years to what they are currently working on. So, for example, when children learn about spreadsheets in Year 3 Computing, they are preparing to use spreadsheets to draw graphs and charts on African rainfall in Y5 Geography lessons.

A Deep Curriculum:
Here at DHJS, we believe that primary school should equip pupils with the fundamentals of learning in each subject. As such we clearly define the essential knowledge for each topic alongside key vocabulary which every child should embed in long-term memory. We carefully plan to ensure that this key knowledge is remembered within and between years. Children will be challenged to employ their knowledge in ways which demonstrate that their learning is securely embedded and not just superficial. How we achieve this is laid out in our Teaching and Learning Policy. Memorable, Enjoyable and Enriching: Our curriculum is rich in knowledge and rich in experience. We view education as more than just knowledge acquisition. School, for our children, is fundamental to who they are and so we value enjoyment alongside understanding. Our teachers are expert tutors who teach children key concepts and skills explicitly and allow creativity to flourish. Memory is at the core of what we do, developing rich mental schema by teasing out links between ideas but also ensuring that trips, visitors and exciting experiences provide enjoyment and ignite a love for learning. |
OUR LEARNING
Every half-term we give parents and carers an overview of what their child will be studying across the curriculum. These 'Our Learning' letters also provide key dates, useful web links, as well as options to enhance the work in school with some 'Home Learning' suggestions.
