PSHE
PSHE at Dulwich Hamlet Junior School develops children as healthy individuals and considerate citizens who understand their emotions, form healthy relationships, manage risks and make informed decisions.
At Dulwich Hamlet, PSHE is an essential part of our weekly teaching timetable. Taught using the Jigsaw programme of study – adapt and enhanced for our school setting, student body and community using the Christopher Winter Project materials – our PSHE curriculum covers all aspects of the statutory guidance for Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education (2020).
We take a whole-school approach to PSHE teaching, with years 3, 4, 5 and 6 covering the same unit of work at the same time. Content is revisited and built upon year-on-year, allowing children to develop their emotional literacy, understanding of themselves and others, and ability to respond to challenges as they grow and progress through the school.
The six topics covered over the course of the school year are as follows:
Being Me in My World
Celebrating Difference
Changing Me
Dreams and Goals
Healthy Me
Relationships
As part of our school-wide commitment to mental health and wellbeing, our PSHE lessons incorporate whole-class mindfulness activities, designed to encourage children to be aware of their thoughts and feelings, and opportunities for personal reflection. Each child has their own PSHE journal, which travels with them through the school, to record their developing understanding of themselves, their relationships with others, and their wider community.
The following table gives and overview of the current Dulwich Hamlet Junior School PSHE curriculum from year 3 to year 6. Please note that, as we adopt the 2020 statutory guidance and as detailed in our RSE policy, the content of the PSHE curriculum is subject to change and adaptation in order to better suit the needs of our pupils. All content is taught using age-appropriate materials and with sensitivity to our school community. Content in purple is taught using plans and resources from the Christopher Winter Project.
