Computing

We develop coding, digital literacy, and online safety skills, empowering children to use technology creatively and responsibly.

Curriculum intent

At  Dulwich Hamlet, our Computing curriculum equips children with essential  digital skills while fostering an understanding of how technology shapes the  world. We focus on three key areas: computer science, digital literacy, and  online safety. Through programming, data handling, and creative projects,  children develop problem-solving skills and confidence in using technology  effectively. Our curriculum ensures pupils can navigate digital environments  safely and responsibly.

How we teach

Computing  is taught using Purple Mash, providing a consistent platform for programming,  spreadsheets, databases, and creative digital tasks. Lessons are structured  around engaging, hands-on activities such as coding with ScratchJr,  programming virtual pets, and designing databases. Online safety is embedded  throughout, ensuring children develop an awareness of online risks and  responsible digital behaviour.

Impact

By the  end of Year 6, pupils have developed strong computational thinking skills,  enabling them to write and debug code, handle data, and apply logical  reasoning. They understand the role of algorithms, variables, and AI concepts  while demonstrating safe and responsible online behaviours. With experience  using a variety of digital tools, they are well-prepared for further  computing challenges in secondary school and beyond.

How you can help at home

Encourage  coding practice using free platforms like Scratch or Code.org. Take an open  approach to discussing online safety, helping your child understand how to  navigate digital spaces responsibly. Support their digital creativity by  exploring tools for music, design, or storytelling. Most importantly, foster  a balanced approach to screen time, ensuring technology is used positively  and purposefully.
