Design & Technology

We inspire creativity, problem-solving, and practical skills through hands-on projects in woodwork, sewing, and cooking.

Curriculum intent

At  Dulwich Hamlet, our Design & Technology curriculum fosters  creativity, curiosity, and problem-solving. Through hands-on projects,  children develop confidence in designing, making, and evaluating, gaining  technical skills and an understanding of design's cultural significance.  Our well-resourced DT Suite, including a kitchen unit and a variety of  materials, provides an inspiring space for learning beyond the  classroom.

How we teach

Children  complete three DT projects each year - woodwork, sewing, and  cooking, building on their skills progressively. Lessons follow a structured  process: pupils design their product with a specific user in mind, select  materials, and create their design, fostering independence and risk-taking.  Evaluations are recorded in DT books, tracking learning over time. Projects  include Year 3 Smoothie Week, Year 4 Catapults, Year 5 Victorian Pull Toys,  and Year 6 Anderson Shelters, with outcomes displayed in our Biennial January  Art Exhibition.

Impact

Through  DT, pupils develop confidence, resilience, and technical expertise. They  learn to think critically, apply problem-solving skills, and understand the  role of design in the wider world.  By  the end of their time at Dulwich Hamlet, children can apply their skills  independently and creatively.

How you can help at home

Encourage  problem-solving and creativity by involving your child in practical tasks  like cooking, crafting, or simple DIY projects. Discuss design choices in  everyday objects, from furniture to packaging. Support them in developing  their fine motor skills through activities like sewing or model-making, and  celebrate their creations to build confidence in their abilities.
