Religious Education

We develop knowledge, respect, and critical thinking about world religions and belief systems, helping children navigate a diverse society.

Curriculum intent

At  Dulwich Hamlet, Religious Education fosters understanding, respect, and  intellectual curiosity about different faiths and worldviews. Our curriculum  equips children with knowledge of major religions in the UK while also  exploring Humanism and scientific perspectives. By engaging with ethical and  philosophical questions, pupils develop empathy, critical thinking, and a  deeper sense of their own beliefs and values.

How we teach

RE  is taught through a progressive, knowledge- and skills-based curriculum.  Children explore core themes, including beliefs about God, places of worship,  key figures and stories, ethics, daily practices, and festivals. Through  discussion, reasoning, comparison, and reflection, pupils build a broad  understanding of religious and non-religious worldviews. Lessons encourage  debate, questioning, and personal reflection, helping children articulate  their own perspectives while appreciating those of others.

Impact

By  the time they leave Dulwich Hamlet, pupils have developed a deep and  connected understanding of world religions and belief systems. They engage  thoughtfully with big questions about meaning, morality, and belonging, and  are equipped to challenge prejudice with respect and empathy. Through their  learning, children become responsible, open-minded members of their  communities, able to reflect on their own beliefs and values in an informed  and respectful way.

How you can help at home

Encourage  open discussions about different beliefs, traditions, and moral questions.  Visit places of worship, museums, or exhibitions to explore religious and  cultural heritage. Read books or watch documentaries that introduce different  perspectives, and support your child in developing their own opinions while  respecting those of others.
