Geography

We develop curiosity about the world, exploring diverse places, people, and environments while building essential geographical skills.

Curriculum intent

At  Dulwich Hamlet, Geography nurtures a sense of wonder about the physical and  human world. Through a journey across continents, children explore diverse  landscapes, cultures, and climates, developing a deep appreciation for the  world and its complexities. Our curriculum encourages critical thinking,  creativity, and an understanding of sustainability, equipping pupils to  become responsible global citizens.

How we teach

Geography  lessons are structured around key concepts: Place, Space, Earth Systems, and  Environment & Sustainability. Pupils build on prior learning as they  progress, deepening their understanding of physical and human geography.  Topics often provide a foundation for cross-curricular learning, making  connections across subjects. Fieldwork opportunities allow children to apply  their knowledge, compare geographical features, and develop analytical skills  through real-world experiences.

Impact

By  the time they leave Dulwich Hamlet, pupils have a broad and connected  understanding of world geography, environmental challenges, and human impact.  They develop critical thinking, spatial awareness, and fieldwork skills that  prepare them for Key Stage 3 and beyond. Most importantly, they leave with a  sense of curiosity and appreciation for the world and its diverse  communities.

How you can help at home

Encourage  your child's curiosity by exploring maps, atlases, and documentaries about  different regions. Discuss global issues such as climate change, urban  development, and sustainability. Take opportunities to explore local  geography and compare them with places your child is learning about in  school.
