Maths

We build confident mathematicians by developing fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills through a mastery-based curriculum.

Curriculum intent

We recognise the importance of mathematics throughout each child’s everyday and future life. We intend to give our pupils the self-confidence and resilience to reach their full potential by ensuring that they have the tools to calculate fluently, reason logically, problem solve and think in abstract ways. We teach children to be independent mathematicians with a deep understanding of maths and its connections, encouraging children to apply their mathematical learning across varied contexts including science, technology and financial literacy. We promote articulate discussion using precise vocabulary, foster mistake-friendly classrooms that value thinking over doing, and instil the belief that maths is for everyone. Through an engaging, inspiring curriculum taught by enthusiastic and passionate teachers, children become resilient, curious learners with the skills to be life-long mathematicians.

How we teach

Our maths curriculum is built on a mastery approach that ensures all children make excellent progress by taking small, connected steps and exploring concepts deeply through reasoning and discussion. It is carefully sequenced to strengthen understanding over time, supported by high-quality resources, structured fluency programmes and targeted interventions. Teachers use specific mathematical representations to help our students "see" the structure of concepts, supporting deep understanding. Staff development is a key priority, with many of our teachers engaging in CPD through the London South East+ Maths Hub, coordinated by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics, to continually enhance teaching and learning in mathematics. Highly skilled staff members review the curriculum regularly to meet the needs of the pupils.

Impact

Our pupils develop a deep understanding of mathematics, building confidence, resilience and fluency. They are curious, enjoy challenge and speak confidently about their learning. With a passion for their own progress, they appreciate the beauty and power of maths while recognising its importance in everyday life. Through this, children grow as enthusiastic mathematicians who thrive on problem-solving and see maths as both meaningful and inspiring.

How you can help at home

Encourage  regular practice of number bonds and times tables to build fluency. Use  Doodle Tables and Times Tables Rock Stars to make learning engaging. Discuss  real-life maths, such as measuring, budgeting, and estimating, to show its  everyday relevance.
