English

We inspire a love of reading and writing through rich, ambitious texts, creative storytelling, and purposeful writing opportunities.

Curriculum intent

Through our English curriculum, pupils develop strong reading and writing skills, a broad vocabulary, and a deep appreciation for literature. Our structured reading programme is rooted in fluency where children develop their comprehension, analytical thinking and reading stamina. Writing tasks are anchored by a strong understanding of audience and purpose. Children explore a range of text types and forms of communication to express themselves.

How we teach

At Dulwich Hamlet, our English curriculum is built around high-quality, aspirational texts that spark imagination and discussion. Children explore a diverse range of literature, from classic works to picture books and non-fiction, developing fluency, comprehension and critical thinking skills. We integrate digital media and creative writing, ensuring all children engage with meaningful, high-quality literature. Writing is embedded across the curriculum, with grammar seamlessly integrated into lessons. Pupils write for real-world purposes, from campaign speeches to fairy tales, reinforcing their learning through engaging, structured tasks. Our dedicated creative writing weeks focus on storytelling techniques, allowing children to experiment with different styles and genres.

Impact

By the time the children leave us in Year 6, we will have equipped them a broad and ambitious vocabulary, the ability to tackle a range of text types, a strong understanding of sentence structure, an appreciation of language and a desire to explore the world through literature.

How you can help at home

Encourage your child to read widely, using our recommended book lists as inspiration. Discuss books together, exploring characters, themes, and new vocabulary. Support their writing by providing opportunities to write letters, stories, or diaries. Use our half-termly spelling letters and weekly homework opportunities to practise key spelling patterns
