Music

We enable everyone to see that music is an integral part of life in all cultures. Children become creative and confident through appreciation, performance and composition.

Curriculum intent

At Dulwich Hamlet, we are known for our exceptional music provision. Our aim is  to instil a lifelong appreciation of music by exposing children to diverse  styles, cultures, and purposes.

How we teach

Music is woven into daily school life, with weekly class music and singing lessons  led by enthusiastic specialists. Pupils have the opportunity to work with peripatetic tutors to learn from a wide variety of instruments in depth and  are given performance opportunities in classrooms, ensembles and assemblies.

Music is woven into daily school life, with weekly class music and singing lessons led by enthusiastic specialists. Children study instruments, styles and genres from a variety of countries and cultures, often linked to their learning in other subject areas, and learn to compose, appraise and to perform in multiple ways.

Impact

Children leave Dulwich Hamlet as confident musicians with strong aural skills,  performance experience, and a broad appreciation of how music is embedded in  all areas of life around the world.

How you can help at home

Encourage an inquisitive mindset  by listening to a wide variety of music with your child and attending live music events, discussing different styles, instruments and effects. Support practice routines and encourage composition if they are learning an instrument and  explore DAWs like BandLab or O-Generator for digital composition.
