Modern Foreign Languages

We nurture curiosity about language, culture and grammar, building strong foundations in French through phonics and vocabulary.

Curriculum intent

At  Dulwich Hamlet, we aim to inspire a love of languages and equip children with  the skills to become confident linguists. Our curriculum develops  understanding of phonics, pronunciation, and grammar while fostering  curiosity about language, etymology, and culture. By embedding regular  retrieval practice, we ensure that children consolidate their learning and  build on their skills over time.

How we teach

French  is taught through a structured approach that introduces language in small,  manageable steps. A strong foundation in phonics supports pronunciation and  spelling, helping children make connections between sounds and written words.  Lessons include songs, stories, games, videos, poems and team projects  providing engaging opportunities for meaningful language practice. Regular  revision and retrieval tasks reinforce previous learning, ensuring long-term  retention.

Impact

By  the end of their time at Dulwich Hamlet, pupils have developed confidence in  speaking, listening, reading, and writing in French. They can apply their  knowledge of phonics and grammar to communicate effectively and understand  the cultural context of the language. Through a carefully sequenced  curriculum, children gain the foundations to continue their language learning  journey with enthusiasm.

How you can help at home

Encourage  your child to practise French at home by listening to songs, watching short  videos, or using language apps. Support them in recalling key vocabulary and  practising pronunciation. Simple activities like labelling objects around the  house in French or playing language games can reinforce learning in a fun,  relaxed way.
